Fuzzy Hearts and Sticks
2008-12-04 - 3:28 p.m.

My fuzzy little heart is broken. I had to make a decision last night that was both very unexpected and extremely difficult. There were only 3 choices to make, and all of them sucked kitty litter, BIG TIME.

Our kitty, Georgy-Porgy (who passed a few months ago), was very popular with the other kitties in the neighborhood. A leader among kitties if you will. He had a little kitty gang that started coming to our front porch each day. It soon became THE place to be! His gang consisted of Smokey, Cloud, Chubs-Ubs, and Sticks. In time, Cloud and Chubs-Ubs disappeared, but Smokey and Sticks continued to come over every day, and gradually found their way into our hearts.

Sticks had been limping for a couple days, but wouldnt let us touch his paw. Yesterday I noticed it was very swollen. Hubby and I scooped him up and took him to the vet to have him looked at, and while there, also have him fixed (something his previous owner neglected to do). We thought we were doing the right thing. We thought we were doing what was best for him. We just wanted to help our little buddy walk, and also prevent any baby sticks from being born. Of course, all this was going to run us about $250, but I told hubby it could be his Christmas present to me.

We went home, expecting to get a call in a couple hours telling us to come pick Sticks up. It didnt happen that way. No sooner had we walked in the door when the Vet called and asked that we come back to talk about Sticks. HE discovered Sticks was infected with FIV or Feline AIDS.

Our choices: 1. Continue with his surgery and anti-biotic for his foot-then release him back into the neighborhood, pretending we dont know what he has and have him possibly infect other kitties; 2. Bring him inside as a house kitty as he could continue to live another 10 years, but with many medical problems later in life; 3. Have him put to sleep.

In our eyes, choice 1 was out of the question. Being a male cat, he could possibly get into a fight and one scratch or bite would be enough for another cat to get it too; choice 2 would be fine with us (even knowing we would be in for some possible major expenses) but, after Porgy died we got a rescue kitty, Coco, and the few times we brought sticks inside (no, they never got close to each other) they didnt get along at all. Coco would run and hide in fear....so we couldnt do that to her; and choice 3............. Yes, I saw no other way. I held little sticks, told him I loved him, he purred softly in my arms and passed away as my tears hit his little face.

BTW...I didnt forget about you Ms. Rosie, heres one just for you!:
