PROP. 9
2008-11-10 - 11:02 p.m.

Lately, Ive been working my butt off everyday. Unfortunately, it keeps growing back.

Proposition 9 passed in California and all our Lifer clients are in a uproar. Understandably so. Before, when theyd come to their parole hearing, they would either receive a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 year denial. If they were finally ready to get out, theyd receive a date. Rest assured, dates are handed out very sparingly. For instance, weve done over 200 hearings this year and only 11 of those guys received a date, and maybe 2 of those will stick...in other words, the Governor will probably reverse at least 9 of them. Well, with Prop. 9 passing, our clients will now receive either a 15, 10, 7, 5, or 3 year denial, and even more rarely, a date.

Between you and I....as a citizen of California, I have no problem with this as far as many of our clients are concerned. Some should never get out. But, as with every rule, there is a few exceptions. Some of these guys came into prison over 30 years ago, didnt kill anyone, perhaps was only the driver, etc.... Yeah, they need to make some exceptions. Weve been swamped with letters and phone calls from clients and family members of clients. Unfortunately, I cant really tell them whats going to happen at this point. I know its frustrating for them, but hey, I didnt write the Proposition. OK, I admit I voted yes on it (shhhhhhhhhh) but I didnt WRITE it.

On the lighter side......Just a little something to think about:

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood
The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside. "That laundry is not very clean," she said. "She doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."
Her husband looked on, but remained silent. Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments.
About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband: "Look, she has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this?"

The husband said, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows." And so it is with life. What we see when watching others depends on the purity of the window through which we look.
